Caroline Wright on her work Impossible Changeling.
My work is multi-disciplinary and frequently site specific. I explore the physical and philosophical aspects of human communication along with differences and commonalities in human behaviour. In recent pieces, a different language has replaced the spoken voice and I have decided to stay silent, relying on alternative, more subtle means of communication such as body language and improvised sign language, quiet communal breathing, the sound of a quill pen repeatedly writing the same phrase. By trying to shift the rules of communication to re-examine seemingly familiar situations, I hope to initiate questions so people may contemplate the hierarchy of power that exists in human relationships. In performance work particularly, I have employed strategies to exert control, thus consciously and unconsciously subverting expectations. Impossible Changeling was commissioned by The Towner Gallery and was one of a series of artist interventions across Eastbourne. The gallery closed its Georgian doors to the public in 2005 and will re-open in autumn 2008 in a newly designed building a stones throw from the seafront.
