A new Artists Programme launched in June as part of the development of the Barking Creative Quarter within the Thames Gateway.
Barking and Dagenham students will now get the chance to work with high profile and award-winning artists on three new installations in the 4,350 sq ft ground floor of The Malthouse, a refurbished studio managed by SPACE on the River Roding. The programme contributes to school students Art & Design GCSE, A Levels and the new Creative Media Diploma, as well as giving them direct experience of working in a professional environment for SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises) and self-employed people within the creative and cultural industries.
SPACE plans to develop a separate programme of professional development support for start-ups to coincide with the participants' graduation. The Artists' Programme is funded by the quarter's developers London Thames Gateway Development Corporation, Barking Abbey and Eastbrook schools and University of the Arts London's widening participation programme.
