Alice Bradshaw and Matthew Geraghty discuss Temporary Art Spaces six-month tenancy in the council-run Piece Hall in Halifax.
A main concern in a collaboration of this nature is creative autonomy and we have enjoyed this aspect during our Temporary Art Space project at the Piece Hall. From our initial discussions and proposals it was clearly mutually agreeable that Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council (CMBC) would provide the space and we would do the rest. Our unfunded, non-commercial approach simplified our relationship with CMBC by negating the need for such things as business rates, business bank accounts and other financial and business complications. Once we had given assurances that we weren't going to ask for any extras, specifically funding, everybody seemed very positive about the proposal. This was back in November 2008 with a bleak economic forecast, and already the percentage of units let in the Piece Hall seemed at an all-time low. We worked out our budget and decided not to suffer a long and tedious funding application process and opted to operate Temporary Art Space on a shoestring budget funded directly by our low-wage day jobs.
