As Turner Contemporary closes the doors at its temporary project space on Margate High Street in order to prepare for the opening of its David Chipperfield-designed building in 2011, two artist-run arts organisations in the town have received backing to maintain their programmes through this winter and next spring.
Crate has received support from Arts Council England to offer a curatorial bursary for an emerging Kent-based artist/curator to run a programme of six visual art events at its two project spaces and at off-site locations. The bursary was awarded to Matthew de Pulford, whose programme, Bad Translation, will take place between October 2009 and May 2010, and will feature new commissions from James Howard, Juneau Projects, Juan Cruz, S Mark Gubb, Lucy Harrison and Tom Duggan. This is the first public programme at Crate, which opened in 2006 with the aim of giving contemporary artists access to dedicated, affordable space for experimentation, production, documentation and research. Situated next-door to Crate at Margate's former electrical substation, Limbo Arts has received Kent County Council's New Recipes award to run 'Dead Season', a series of live art events seeking to examine the pagan and folk roots underpinning Margate's summer traditions through the dark glass of winter and economic downturn.
