London Photomonth is the only photography festival in the capital and the largest event of its kind in the UK.
Focusing exclusively on East London, Photomonth is now in its ninth year and showcases over 150 exhibitions and events held in more than seventy-five galleries and involving over 500 photographers. It promises "powerful and poetic imagery seeking to express the truth, often moving and mysterious, opening up issues and ideas, addressing contemporary culture and evoking the past." The festival kicks off at V&A Museum of Childhood, Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green with an exhibition of Paul Trevor's gritty, black and white images that depict East End life from the 70s, 80s and 90s. A first this year is the launch of a new Youth Photography Award, sponsored by the World Photography Organisation. The theme is Children's Rights in support of the UNICEF Declaration of the Rights of a Child. Other programmes include the Photomonth Photofair (Saturday 10 October, 10am-6pm) that takes place over the whole of Spitalfields Traders Market and comprises 100 stalls and stands with photographers selling their prints, galleries representing photographers, publishers, products and services, talks and walks from the photo-bus and a photo-bar, admission to which is free.
