Auto-Italia South East was formed in April 2007 by three artists: Amanda Dennis, Kate Cooper and Rachel Pimm. It is the name of the project, a larger network of artists, as well as the space they run in a donated building in South London.
Auto-Italia South East aims to produce a new project every month, including an accompanying peer critique. These projects form a larger programme focusing on process-based collaborative practice which is inherently geared towards dialogue and a relationship to the world as opposed to objects and a market. It also aims to explore the practices of a growing peer group of artists working in collaboration and provides emerging artists with an opportunity to produce work in a unique space and take risks with their practice. This project provides networking opportunities for young artists, time and space for peer review, critical discussion and debate. Auto-Italia South East provides free-to-use studio space on a project-by-project basis to help young artists sustain their practice and facilitate future collaborative projects as well as working with other groups, including Pallas Contemporary Projects, Upset The Rhythm, FAT architects, FormContent and curation students at The Royal College of Art as well as other artist-run spaces in London, Dublin and Berlin.
