It can't have gone unnoticed that amongst twenty-nine bids for the 2015 City of Culture that one came from 'The Countryside'. In an interview with The Guardian, spokesperson Andy Woodman confirmed that they were making a political point: "Facilities available in the countryside far outstrip any city. The countryside has culture, heritage, and some of the finest sporting events and venues in the world." Up in Northumberland, Jilly Morris arrives this month as new artist in residence for VARC (Visual Arts in Rural Communities). She works in a variety of media including porcelain, thread and wire and uses some traditional craft skills such as stitch and enamel to make her artwork. She is particularly interested in memory and how it is embedded in personal, cultural and social identity. Through interaction and collaboration with the Tarset community Jilly plans to create a series of artworks that address the importance of memory in a community.
