Organised by Sophie Hope, co-facilitated with Veronica Restrepo and held at London? Austrian Cultural Forum, an event around how artists survive seemed somewhat at odds with the venues incredibly opulent surrounding.
Making a living: Artistic survival in 2009 followed on from the FUNding FACTORY project initiated by Sophie in Vienna earlier this year. The event offered an interesting format with several concurrent activities, one involving three soap boxes to be used for speakers with one kept vacant for a new person to join the discussion. Speakers presented passionate and articulate accounts of personal experiences alongside general concerns and suggestions for artists. Soapbox issues raised included how do we value our artists in comparison with other countries? Is there a problem with our education system? Is there too much emphasis on core subjects over the arts and are students increasingly treated as consumers by HE? Another repeated concern throughout the session was artists not having high enough expectations for themselves and that too many are working for free. This was neatly summed up by Sonya Dyer? comment: "It's making the situation worse for everyone else when you accept poor conditions".
