Artists embracing a do-it-yourself approach to the promotion of their practice using new technologies, open source software and online communities, was the idea behind two seminars organised in partnership with Chapter Arts Centre and WARP at g39.
Aimed at providing professional development opportunities to artists in Wales, The Centre is Here seminars series took place as part of 'May We Live in Interesting Times', a festival for alternative technology in Cardiff. This year, the festival's theme was DIY and the seminars were part of a rich programme including exhibitions, workshops, talks and screenings throughout the city. Speakers at the first of two seminars taking place during the festival were Carl Morris, Anton Hecht, Alex Pearl and myself, with Martin John Callanan chairing. A broad range of topics was covered including: work made utilising new technologies; creating online networks and bespoke software; using blogs and online profiles as part of your artistic practice, and the potential of online communities for creating a stronger voice for artists. Issues raised during questions included how to improve online presence and advice on practical career issues. The audience included a mix of recent graduates, students and more established artists as well as gallery representatives (mainly interns) who were there to get ideas about promoting their work or venues.
