Brian McClave and Gavin Peacock recall how they joined forces within their artistic careers, and discuss their motives for collaborating.
The most fundamental reason why I like collaborating is that it's more enjoyable: it's a process of dialogue and communication, rather than simple experiment and success or failure. On your own it's possible to work yourself into a dead end; when working with someone else this can be spotted and rectified much sooner. After initially meeting him in 2003, I met Gavin again in 2006 when I first saw his Flat Pack project, which is essentially a modular sculptural system that the audience can build their own sculptures with. He was making a film of the opening and, as I also run a time-lapse business, we started talking about time-lapse films. Very soon after that I found the 'Compton Skyline' commission for a large public artwork that had a community involvement element. I already planned to work with the artist Dave Smith on this, and it became obvious that it would be great to also get Gavin involved and join forces by introducing my time-lapse expertise to Flat Pack. On the back of that project we thought it would be great to continue collaborating.
