Following a quiet call for tenders in late December, the Cultural Leadership Programme (CLP) has awarded funds totalling £50,000 to two programmes of leadership development for artists/practitioners in the cultural and creative industries.
Seen as pilot leadership development opportunities, these are designed to help CLP define and determine new ways of supporting individual artists and practitioners who are seeking to develop their leadership skills and behaviours. Led by Battersea Arts Centre (BAC), The Independents will connect participants with other independently-minded organisations, offering an expanded network, peer mentoring and residency opportunities. BAC believes that independent arts leaders are a vital resource for the cultural sector: "These individuals often retain a fleetness-of-foot and entrepreneurial zeal which positions them at the vanguard of artform and audience development. Unconstrained by organisational weight and expectation, the independent often displays a flexibility, opportunism and dynamism that can otherwise be hemmed in by the constraints of large organisational structures."
