Led by artistic director Lizzi Walton, the 2009 Stroud International Textiles Festival showcases established international textile and applied artists and thinkers alongside emerging new talent.
A mix of exhibitions, workshops, talks, performance, events and workshops, community and artist-led projects will take place in Stroud, Gloucestershire 1-21 May showcasing work by seventy-five artists, speakers and performers. The programme aims "to tease and challenge the conventional view of textiles, and build a reputation for innovation and new ideas" by combining textiles with visual and applied arts and sound and music, exploring the cross influences between the disciplines. Included are textile artists Michael Brennand-Wood, Margo Selby, Hilary Bower and Matthew Harris; willow artist Mary Butcher; jewellers Susan Cross, Nora Fok, Nel Linssen and Yoko Izawa illustrating how textile techniques like stitching, weaving, binding and wrapping are used in jewellery; and emerging new artists such as Rachel Gornall and Ruth Waller in collaboration with Lee Hewett; and a new interactive installation from Studio Seven. Performers include jazz visionary Keith Tippett performing improvised sound with Julie Tippetts.
