Janie Nicoll brings together in one place a mixed assortment of surprising works deliberately sited within a domestic rather than a gallery setting.
'HALLelujah!', curated by artist Janie Nicoll and shown in her own flat in April, came about partly as an open call for artworks and also as a result of connections she has made at networking events and artists residencies in the last two years. She has attended NAN networking events in Liverpool, Cardiff, Bristol, Newcastle, and most recently in October's NAN supported the Winner takes It All symposium in Liverpool during Capital of Culture. Connections have also been made through artists-led initiatives such as Ayling and Conroy's Shining Cliff residency (My house Projects) and Sweden's Deviant Art Festival. This exhibition exemplifies the DIY ethos intrinsic to these endeavours, and actively brings together a selection of artists who are dynamically involved in grassroots artist-led projects in a variety of locations nationally. Held resolutely outwith the white cube gallery space, artworks shown interrogated notions of the domestic setting and its possibilities and limitations. the exhibition showcased the diversity of approaches across a range of media including Alice Bradshaw's dysfunctional household objects, Ellen Burrough's drawings of petty criminals, Elizabeth Rowe's...
