Artists across the UK are being challenged to use the nation as a blank canvas for twelve inspirational commissions that will showcase our creativity to the world, as part of Cultural Olympiad.
Artists taking the lead is being developed by Arts Council England, in partnership with London 2012 and the arts councils of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Twelve commissions of up to £500,000 each will be awarded to create twelve new works of art across the country; one in each of the nine English regions, and in the nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Amongst artists invited to be part of the decision-making panels are: Eastern - Simon Woolham; East Midlands - Terry Shave and Jeanie Finlay; North East - Catherine Bertola and Ira Lightman; North West - Naomi Kashiwagi; South East - Alice Kettle; South West - Amanda Wallwork and West Midlands - Dr Mitra Memarzia and Tanya Raabe. Panels for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are under development. From a shortlist of artists announced in July, the twelve commissions awarded will be announced in October. Applications can be accepted online up until 29 May. University for the Creative Arts is leading a consortium of thirteen universities in South East England to deliver the Creative Campus Initiative, in the run up to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
