Through its ongoing research and dialogue with artists, a-n aims to identify themes that consistently appear in each and every artists requirements, no matter how diverse their practice.
Space, time and freedom are three such elements, and residency schemes can normally offer these in abundance, facilitating a committed period of reflection, trialing and production. In this month's issue, we focus on a number of significant residency projects around the UK that aim to remove the normal restrictions artists face in their career by providing an environment geared around space, time and freedom, and we hear from the resident artists about the benefits to their practices. This month's Collaborative relationships feature continues this theme with a report from Christine Wilcox-Baker about her residency and forthcoming exhibition at Tatton Park. In his report on the recent RSA conference 'The State of the Arts' (page 15), Jack Hutchinson forecasts a significant change on the horizon in governance of arts patronage. Drawing comparisons with the music industry, Hutchinson observes that "the networking capabilities afforded to today's [music] artists offer an exciting opportunity to bypass these overarching bodies and determine the market for themselves", and that "the potential for mass collaboration between visual artists is immense and should be exploited".
