Nick Lambrianou visited this bi-annual showcase to meet some of the emerging artists who have been awarded fellowships from the trust.
The influential educationalist Henry Morris founded the Digswell Arts Trust in 1957. His intention was to provide studios and accommodation for artists and their families in the heart of Welwyn Garden City, furthering his ideal of the artist and craftsperson as the creative centre of the modern community. Since then the trust has maintained its community projects and through its fellowship scheme has developed into a means of providing affordable studio space, initially for a one-year period, to a wide variety of practising artists and craftspeople. There are now two sites between them, these provide studio spaces for thirty people. Facilities at Fairlands Valley Farmhouse, which is only half an hour away from London by train, also include a darkroom, forge and a kiln. Surrounded by a large park, there is also a garden and a small wooded area belonging to the farmhouse itself. The open studios event was an opportunity for the public to see the work created at the farmhouse. Denise Stonebridge and Ryszard Bar are two painters currently there and represent two distinct approaches to contemporary painting.
