Twelve poets and six artists have been appointed to work on this project for the Derbyshire moorlands. ‘Companion Stones’ draws on the Peak District’s heritage of guide stoops – waymarkers which were introduced by Parliamentary decree during the Eighteenth Century to help travellers find their way across the more remote areas of Britain. The artists, poets and stonemasons selected for the project will develop a set of twelve ‘companion stones’. Like the guide stoops, these stones will bear an inscription, directions to an uncertain future. The stones will be exhibited on the Derbyshire moorlands and supporting and promotional material will make it accessible to a wide range of Peak District residents and visitors.
