Origin

31 July 2008

2007 RCA graduate Naori Priestly is one of the established and emerging applied artists selected from the open submission for the Crafts Council’s Origin in 2008. Responding to the advert in the March issue of a-n Magazine, she recognises the significant annual event in the crafts calendar as “the perfect stage to start my career for my career to start off. I am hoping to meet people who are enthusiastic about crafts and my work, to meet galleries and to get some commissions for work or an exhibition”.

Born in western Japan in 1966, Naori studied sculpture in Tokyo and New York before settling in England over a decade ago. Her RCA MA in Mixed Media has led her to employs humor to convey the darker, more sinister side of everyday life. Working with textiles, she employs domestic craft skills, such as hand-knitting, crochet, embroidery, appliqué and hand-felt, along with digital technology, like computerised embroidery.

Based in a vibrant artists’ community at London’s Kingsgate Studios, Naori is delighted to have become the 10,000th AIR member. She looks to AIR both for practical support – such as the AIR members’ £5m Public and Products Liability insurance – and to extend her professional network.
