Susannah Silver reports from the Visual Arts Network of South Africa conference.
At a national visual arts conference in Cape Town early in February, the Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA) invited a-n to talk to an audience of ninety artists and cultural practitioners about its role in the UK arts scene, in terms of networking artists and advocacy of good professional practice. Formed in 2003, VANSA is a membership organisation established by and for South African artists and arts practitioners to represent and lobby for the interests of all active practitioners in the South African visual arts sector. It is an emerging national voluntary body intent on establishing a broad membership base, which includes leaders in the South African visual arts community. Its published five-year plan focuses on art and social development, concentrating on concerns around equality and diversity issues, access to resources and opportunities, and ensuring strong communication links with government. The three-day conference entitled Transformation | Opportunity | Growth was held at the University of Cape Town and will, I think, prove to be a milestone in the development of the infrastructure for contemporary arts practices.
