Thematic features and partnerships
The Art House is a membership organisation for all artists, that addresses the issues faced by disabled people who wish to work in the visual arts and crafts. It aims to be a truly inclusive organisation giving artists the support they need, as individuals, to benefit from its activities. Director Liz Whitehouse describes how the organisation functions and what it has to offer.
We offer a variety of opportunities to our members. Firstly, the opportunity to make and show new work. We organise a range of projects from residencies for individual artists to exhibitions open to all members. This year the exhibition 'Outside the Box' at Crossley Gallery in Dean Clough, Halifax (reviewed in [a-n] September 2000) featured work by fifty artists, who created an innovative exhibition on five themes. We are currently beginning a new participatory project for 100 artists, sponsored by Denby Pottery Company, and hope the resulting exhibition will tour in 2001. We have also been fortunate this year in receiving two Year of the Artist awards for residencies in collaboration with English Heritage. At Pickering Castle, artist Valerie Clarke explored ideas of 'heritage' and 'culture' and Max Bretherton designed a website that solicited images of individual's ideas of heritage and culture from around the world. The website is still active and can be seen at www.wherewhenwhence.co.uk and Clarke's work is at Pickering Castle until the end of January.
