Co-Recite the Universal Declaration of Human Rights From Memory With Monica Ross

WHO: All artists

WHAT: Artists are invite to co-recite the work, Anniversary – an act of memory with theartist Monica Ross. Monica first performed a solo version of this work, rightsrepeated- an act of memory, at Beaconsfield in 2005 and the forthcoming recitation is to be a collective recitation - also from memory - of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by artists. Since December 2008 she has been presenting solo and collective versions of the recitation under the title Anniversary - an act of memory. This title refers to the 60th anniversary of the Declaration in December 2008. The aim is to eventually carry out 60 solo, collective and multi-lingual recitations of the text, from memory, in different contexts and with different groups of people. We are planning this return of the work to Beaconsfield as a collective recitation by artists and would very much appreciate it if you would consider taking part.

WHEN: Beaconsfield gallery, London, at 2.30pm on Saturday the 19th of September. How the recitation works: Monica begins by reciting the Preamble and then calls out the number of each Article from 1-30. When an Article number is called out whoever has learned that Article recites it from memory, in whatever language they prefer. If an Article doesn't have a memoriser-recitor then Monica recites it. In each situation some Articles are emerging as priorities for different groups, eg at The Women’s Library several people chose and recited Article 18. In Brighton, for the 'Save Omar' campaign group, Articles 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 on detention and equality before the law were priorities. The recitations take between 35-55 minutes depending on the workings of individual memory and how many people participate. There is no other preparation except for a quick get together 15/20 minutes beforehand so that e.g. if we have 6 people who have memorised Article 10, those recitors can decide on a sequence/mode of reciting. Each recitation is being documented by video/photography and audio recording. If you do decide to participate, please let me know whether you would be agreeable to this.
