Who can apply: Current a-n Artist, Arts organiser and Joint (Artist and Arts Organiser) members. We welcome applications from individuals and collectives. (If applying as a collective at least one member of the group must be an a-n member).

What: a-n is seeking four Guest Editors to contribute ideas and commission content for Artists Newsletter, a new series of quarterly online publications for our 40th Anniversary year.

Deadline: 12 noon, 5 October 2020.

a-n The Artists Information Company is turning 40 this autumn. We will be celebrating our anniversary from September 2020, the month that the first Artists Newsletter was published in 1980.

As part of these celebrations, we’re seeking Guest Editors to contribute ideas and commission content for Artists Newsletter, a new series of special online publications for our 40th Anniversary year. We’ll be publishing four issues of Artists Newsletter across our anniversary year, with each celebrating one of the four decades since a-n was first published, and reflecting upon the issues, ideas, and areas of practice that are important to artists and a-n members today.

Supporting Artists for 40 Years

a-n has grown from a grass-roots 500-copy-a-month newsletter to a full professional membership organisation focusing on members’ needs. We are now the largest artists’ membership organisation in the UK with over 20,000 members. We run an annual programme supporting artists’ professional development. We advocate on behalf of our members and the arts sector to improve artists’ livelihoods.

In the past 40 years we have played a crucial role in supporting artists and we are marking this with a year-long celebration from September 2020. This includes: a special anniversary logo created by a-n member Maria Hatling; plus we have delved into our rich archive, interviewing 40 Artists who have been significant in shaping a-n and the visual arts in the UK; and we’re looking forward by developing an Artists’ Manifesto that reflects the concerns of artists today and commissioning 40 Actions by artists to signal future change.

What is Artists Newsletter?

As part of the 40th Anniversary celebrations, a-n is planning a new series of quarterly online publications. Artists Newsletter will celebrate the a-n archive, with each publication focussing upon the issues and ideas that were important to artists during one of the four decades since a-n was founded – the 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s.

Each publication will also include extended extracts from our 40 Artists interview series which re-visits key artists who feature in the a-n archive.

Plus newly commissioned articles and features, commissioned by Guest Editors selected from this call out, will reflect the issues, ideas, and areas of practice that are important to artists and a-n members today.

Artists Newsletter will be circulated to a-n’s entire membership of over 20,000 artists and arts professionals.

What is the role of the Guest Editor?

The Guest Editor will work with the a-n programme team to identify and develop ideas and a theme for one issue of Artists Newsletter, and will commission 4-5 pieces of content. The Guest Editor’s commissioned content will be a key feature of each issue of Artists Newsletter.

We’re keen that Guest Editors will come up with ideas and themes that they feel are not currently reflected in the content produced by a-n (or by other visual arts organisations).

Whilst content will need to fit both the requirements of the a-n site and the Artists Newsletter online publication, we are keen to be as flexible as possible and will work with Guest Editors to achieve any particular formatting or specific stylistic requirements they have.

What is the fee?

Guest Editor fee is £1,000.

A budget to commission writers is also available, alongside a budget for the commissioning of images.
