Last semester I had a good idea of what I wanted to do for my degree project, but know because I have not done any art over the Christmas period I am starting to second guess my thoughts and ideas. I have begun to realize that not creating work for that long, makes me feel so unmotivated that I wanted to start my whole project again.

After playing around with different idea I began to see that I was still creating the same work, and using the same subject matter of process. I think that the only thing that I am struggling with at the moment is inspiration, in particular artists’. Whenever someone looks at my work they would always reference Jackson Pollock and he is an inspiration of mine, but I don’t want my work to be a representation of him. This is the time that I want my personality shine through my work almost like it is a part of me. Now looking at the work I have created so far I really like the vibrant colours throughout the work but one thing that I am not quiet happy with is that to me it look a bit busy in places, I don’t think that I have not found a flow to my work.

While looking at the artist Sol LeWitt I was attracted to the block colours that he used, to create pattern and shape. With this artist in my mind I decided to use the  blocking of colours to create this composition, but it is not finished yet.

The decision to use two different artists to create one composition, I haven’t quiet decided whether it was a good idea or not. Until the painting is completely finished I don’t think that I can make a critical decision on this piece. But it could take me a bit of time before I can say that it is finished, the one thing that I can say is that even though the whole composition is big blocking out parts of the painting makes my mark making much more expressive and quick.

As I have only just started developing my studio practice, I am more in the stage of figuring out where I want me project to go. So I decided to experiment with another piece of work, now bare in mind that I am just in the experimenting stage I wanted to try different ways to apply the paint and this is what I have done.

Looking at these photos I now that look much like Jackson Pollock’s work and his is a big inspiration to me, but I don’t want to be someone that looks like another artist. So I had a tutorial with my lecturer, we discussed a few opinions that I could possible do and a few different artists to look at.

So the ideas are to use the splatters of paint as a background and then use the same technique that I did with my other piece of work which was a palette knife. Another idea is to section parts of the painting of to create something different in each.

There are three artists that I am looking at and they are Clyfford Still, Sol LeWitt and Gerrard Richter.

As you can see from a previous post I started this particular piece of work like the others, and doing the same movements over and over again become boring and repetitive. So with that in mind I decided to change direction and use a palette knife instead. I found that a palette knife gave me more range to move and I could flow the paint the way I wanted. While creating my painting I listen to certain types of music to inform what I am doing, and as a result I believe that it has made this piece look more energetic. If I was to create this piece again I think that I would use a palette knife right from the start and also listen to different types on music like rock and soul.

I decided to change the size of my canvas for the piece of work, my thinking behind this is that if the viewers get close enough to the canvas that is all they will be able to see. Working on the canvas un-stretched on the wall has made by ability to move across the canvas easily.

The process of the colours are backwards working from dark to light, but also light to dark this way I can vary the colours that I use in certain areas of the canvas.
