To gain an understanding of what to seek out in Tokyo I met with Daikon zine on the 1st September.
“daikon* zine is a platform for the writing and art of South-East and East Asian non-binary people and women in Europe”
Founding members Kay and Hannah both visit Tokyo regularly. They generously gave me invaluable leads on artist spaces, what to expect in terms of language and getting around the city and many great book recommendations to seek out! This helped shaped my expectations and plans for my days in Tokyo. From here I began to make note of gallery and store opening times and to reach out to artists via email.
For further research I visited the LAZY OAF Guide to Japan store exhibition in London, which had a selection of Japanese zines and a guide by a Japanese based illustrator to the city and it’s print culture.
