I’ve made some decisions about my work this week. I’ve been focused on working hard towards the show but without knowing what I can show for sure I’ve been going mad producing things I think might be more suitable. The problem is the work I want to show is installation stuff and the work I think I should be showing is the 2D framed wall work. I haven’t got much time to get it completed in though so I’ve decided to concentrate my efforts on the work I want to show or I’ll regret it and I’ll just have to make ajustments to displaying it if it can’t be shown the way I want it to.
I’ve been thinking that if I can’t display the ‘Illegal Logging’ stuff on the floor it could be stacked up against a wall like a log pile and ‘Forest: Lungs of the World’ could go on plinths although I couldn’t show many. The new work ‘Pores for Thought’ should be able to be hung like I want it to though.
I’ve been working on a project were the art resembles microscopic segments of trees. It involves rolling paper from old books and although very time consuming, the effort is starting to pay off and the work is coming together nicely and I think I’ve finally thought of a way to display them. I wanted to frame them but they look much better without. I was going to sculpt the single pieces together but by accident I found that they look best if they are hung in a line, so you can see through them to the next.
I’ve been working on another idea for the fellowship show this week. I’m really excited about it and although I’ve only just started I think I’m going to get some really nice results from it. I guess it’s a development of the tree watercolours that were drawn over, but I am concerned that I keep jumping ahead of myself, I haven’t finished the illegal logging installation pieces yet and now the watercolours are on hold too. And I’m certainly not going to need all this work for the exhibition. Infact it’s suprising what little space there really is to exhibit. The room is huge but there’s walkways and boxed raditors to consider. I’ll have to get intouch with the other fellows because I need some direction I think.
Took a few quick snaps today of the set.
All finished and I think for my first effort at set design it isn’t bad at all. Today I had to finish the shop window and it’s contents and the window above the door. I was slightly nervous drawing whilst some classes sat in on the rehearsal of the show was taking place.
I’ve started working on the tree project again. Not sure about it yet though, I’m happy with the pattern but I think the image might be to literal, maybe I should only use part of a tree so it’s not as recognisable. I’m not even sure what it’s about, I’m trying to show how beautiful trees are. They are beautiful anyway without me painting them, but they’re taken for granted and I want to show something that we don’t notice so you stop and look.
I don’t know what it is about trees that I love so much. They make me feel secure, except for at night.and I enjoy they’re almost silence. The kissing tree is my favourite tree and I intend to base a project on it sometime. It overhangs a pavement that I walked down as a child, as a girlfriend, wife and mother and I often pause under it’s branches and think of different times of my life. I worry that it will be cut down soon because it’s leaning into the pathway.
