So you have spent hours and hours creating the best content around. You have optimised it and uploaded it to your site, sat back and waited for your organic traffic to sky rocket. One month on, you haven’t had the results you were hoping for; You are asking yourself why? It could be your design. We humans love a good informative read but we are vain creatures. We could be presented with the most valuable content on the internet, but if it is not well presented, we don’t want to know; It isn’t engaging. If Content is King, Design is Queen and you’ll need both to command your online kingdom. But fear not, I have put together five top tips to help you on your way to design rule:

1. Branding.
Keep in mind your company branding, after all your website is the online HQ of your brand.

2. Consistency
Have a core style running through all of the pages on your website but also throughout your social media channels. This will create a professional synergy which will instill trust in potential customers.

3. Responsive
A website design in this day and age has to hold it’s own on mobile and tablet. Visits on these portable platforms now amount for a third of all traffic on the internet and this rise is set to continue indefinitely.

4. Simplicity
If in doubt, keep it simple. Will flash butterflies flapping around and a cursor shaped like a love heart really add anything to what you are trying to say? You don’t need to pull out all of the stops to make a statement. The recent popularity of flat design is testement to that.

5. Typeface
Only use a couple of complementing typefaces, three if necessary and more than three ONLY if you have a good reason to do so. Remember you can use font styling such as Italics, Bold or Underline to add variety. Never use COMIC SANS unless you are designing a poster for a toddler’s birthday party!
