These reeds were frozen in the winter, some of the textures of the waters edge provide inspiration. In good weather a visit to Holy Island off the north west coast of Angelsey provided a real insight and reminder of our relationship with the sea for transport. Beside the very long breakwater there the ferry from Holyhead to Ireland moves to and fro all day until late at night, it’s possible to hear the rumbling of the  ferry engines at night.

these first paintings are small.. so that it’s possible to experiment, it’s fairly easy to work outside on this canvas size and it dries quickly, trying to capture the perspectives of the beach and tide line is tricky and it takes a few attempts, also the horizon of the sea which I’ve yet to really master..

many birds live among the reeds and occasionally emerge, a Stonechat being the most unusual I’ve seen so far..

The first visitors i saw in winter on the estuary were Canada geese which I tried to capture here..

the first attempts at painting on canvas again after many years of photography feels like a different space to be in again, slow, tentative and hoping to develop into a full exhibition, although i can’t imagine not including some photographs..
