Leading Greek business woman and cultural politician, Varvara Roza is curating an art programme in London beginning this autumn with a series of exhibitions by contemporary Greek artists at J/M Gallery in Notting Hill Gate.

Education

Varvara Roza was born in Thessaloniki (Macedonia) in 1979 and grew up in Florina. She studied at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki taking two degrees:  the first, a BA (Hons) in Marketing and Advertising (1997), and the second a BA (Hons) in Politics (2001). She also has a Masters in National Relationships and Negotiations from New York College, Thessaloniki (2004). She is currently in her second year studying for a Bachelors of Law at King’s College London.

Running an Energy Business

Varvara has worked in her family coal mining business Lignitoryhia Achladas Ltd. based in Florina since the age of 16. The company was established in 1936 by her grandfather and currently supplies 82% of the electricity across mainland Greece. She held the position of Industrial Marketing Director and Shareholder from 2003 until 2011 when she took over as director following the death of her father.

Youth Work

Varvara has been a member of the Rotary Club of Central Thessalonki since the age of 18, taking the role of President from 2010 to 2017. In 2006 she created a project entitled Youth Entrepreneurship in Thessalonki and Athens which she managed until 2016. It now has over 3000 members.

Politics and Culture

In 2010 Varvara was elected as one of 12 council members in the Municipality of Thessaloniki where she served as Deputy Mayor in the City Hall until 2014. Her specific role was to managing all the cultural activities within the entire municipality of Thessalonki.

Contemporary Greek art programme in London

In addition to managing culture in her region, Varvara has always had a great passion for the arts and comes from a family of art collectors. Her new project is to introduce the work of contemporary Greek artists to the London art scene, through an ongoing series of exhibitions and events starting in October 2019.

“Modern Greece has a thriving artistic community and through my extensive experience working in the cultural sector, I am pleased to introduce some of its brightest protagonists to London.” She says.
