It’s a complicated business, the spinning of plates…

Form filling, finance balancing, paper work straightening, diary keeping… they all take up time.

Thinking about theories and concepts and how things fit together does too. When you make an installation consisting of things and garments and sounds and music and they are all stitched together with words, that is a whole other sub-committee of thought and considerations. Alongside those are the physical “How the bloody hell do I attach this thing to the ceiling?” sort of problems. I reckon you could make a full time job out of being an artist without ever having to make any art….

Which brings me to this week…

I have now well established the whole project accountancy system, I have done lots of thinking and considering, juggled the dates in my diary, and I think I know how I’m going to attach the bloody thing to the ceiling. No recording until next week as Dan is off recording another album, which, I can tell you right now, is going to be just brilliant…

So here I am, sat in the studio drinking tea, dunking a hobnob for dangerously progressively longer periods… I’ve checked my arts council plan… I balanced the account… everything fits… no recording to do just yet… so what shall I do now?

I kid you not, I actually had this moment of blankness, a total absence of knowledge about what I was supposed to be doing… I picked up my tea and walked about the gallery… I took my rubbish out to the skip at the back of the shops…

I sat back down and looked around me… mic… speakers… interface… white emulsion… tea… macbook… what was it….?

I suddenly realised in a panicky sort of rush that I hadn’t done any sewing for ages (nearly two weeks!)

With shaky fingers, I picked up the bra again and started to sew!

and sew and sew and sew…

I have dived in again, and the water’s lovely…

stitched text and flowers… two more bras!

It’s like coming home after a holiday. The needle slips comfortably in and out of the fabric. We know what we are doing.

Aaaahhhhh……..

bit of music?
I love Jesca Hoop… strange swoops of melody and beautiful intriguing lyrics. Her voice is magical…
