I am a photographer working in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It’s been almost a year since I graduated from my degree, and I haven’t done anything with my photography. Hopefully this blog will help me get motivated and develop my critical thinking.

Not posted anything recently, haven’t been able to afford getting film developed. Here’s a few digital test shots from the “Transitory” series, their film equivalents will have better composition due to differences in the lenses.

For me, this project is about finding something that I think shouldn’t be where it is, something that will make an interesting photo. The problem is that things I find interesting are not necessarily interesting for other people.

For example, everyday on my way to work I pass a telephone box. Next to it is a road barrier, presumeably forgotten by the person who put it there. For me, this is an interesting photograph because I see the barrier everyday, however, I showed my girlfriend this photograph, and it obviously didn’t have the same meaning, and so wasn’t interesting for her.

The other project I’ve been developing is called “Transitory.” The project consists of a series of unique “events.”

In my practice I am interested in how photography is linked to a distinct moment in time. With this project I want to photograph events which are open to a very limited timeframe for one reason or another. For example, the photo, “Antiviral Collection Point” is linked to a certain timeframe as it recalls the period of time when the public were being vaccinated against swine flu.

The photographs, “Man With Box” and “Police Tape” are linked to a more physical timeframe. “Man With Box” having a possible timeframe of about half a second as the man walked past, and “Police Tape” having a timeframe of maybe a few days before someone removes the cone and tape.

This project is very slow in development, it takes me a while to find something that I think is worth photographing, or happen on something by chance, I’ve got about 8 images I’m happy with from working on this project for about 2 months.

“The Eastgate Quarter” is the first of two projects I have begun to develop since graduating.

The Eastgate Quarter is an area in Leeds city centre which is planned to be redeveloped. About 80% of the area consists of a car park, but what I am interested in are the businesses which surround the car park.

These photographs are preliminary shots I took a while ago. I have since shot a roll of film focusing on the businesses which inhabit the area, and from my own development, as well as just writing this blog now, I think this is the direction in which the project will head.

Thought I’d start off by introducing myself. I am a recent graduate from a BA in Photography, Video and Digital Imaging from the University of Sunderland.

The course was quite concept-driven, but there was sufficient teaching of technical knowledge as well. However, I think more could have been taught on professional practice (maybe this is dealt with in the MA course).

I, as well as other people from the course, have not developed our practice in an “art” way. Most people have either got a job unrelated to photography, or gone down the route of commercial photography. I am one of the former. I currently work in a community training centre in Bradford, where I work as media officer for the centre.

Ideally, this blog will help me develop my artistic practice, and through this, help me to develop opportunities as an artist.
