Looking at other worlds, other artists casting – Kiki Smith who’s work I admire, casts her work in a multitude of materials. Addressing the vulnerability and the strength of women, which is reflected in the material used to make a strong statement about the work. In her work Hard Soft Bodies she used paper mache taken from a life size model. Shells like vessels – traces of the bodies that once filled the fragile like skin. In Upside-Down Body with Beads, 1993 she exemplifies defiance against the social order of patriarchal society by presenting a strong female bronze cast figure, doubled over showing her genitalia evidently sexually active with her flow of beads settled around her on the floor. My point being that the material you use gives strength to the work, and something I want to convey when I cast my clay figures in bronze and lead. A huge learning curve ahead, but one that has to be overcome to achieve my goal.

Different materials without doubt can add weight to the work. Bronze is a very heavy, strong, cold metal and dark in colour leaning to masculinity, where as lead is grey, dull, very heavy, toxic and poisonous.

Danielle and I sparked up the furnace yesterday afternoon and melted the lead to take a cast from the dry plaster cast for my work Love Triangle. It did not turn out as I expected, however it has interesting properties and colouring. But my main concerns are “If this is like this, how on earth am I to cast the 3 big figures for my degree project, Help? We must have got something wrong, so more research and playing around required, watch this space? I tried to upload a video but I was getting a message saying it couldn’t be uploaded for security reasons, so visit link below…

On February 25th 2016, we, the final year BA Hon Degree students held an Art auction to raise funding for our degree show. We made a whooping £8000. We were all involved in different aspects of the organisation for the event. Sourcing work from artists, photographing work, creating the website and online shop, scheduling, hanging of the work, designing the catalogue, and working on the night. We were all exhausted by the end of it, but all worth while and everyone got very good experience in the field of curating, and event management. This is the fifth art exhibition/event that I’ve worked on since I started my BA Hon Degree. I have previous experience working and fund raising on PTA’s at my children’s schools, and project managing community events and art projects.

A portrait of abusive relationships, and the burden on another who is aware of the reality that others do not see…

This is my lasted work – figurative sculptures part of my degree project. These three clay figures are to be cast in lead and bronze. The next stage is to make moulds which is a long process consisting of several processes to get to the finite casting in metal. This work is looking at the relationship between the figures, all caught up in a love triangle. Addressing the tension between them, the power of control from the large devil like figure on the emaciated small weak figure. He is reticent, and has a gaping hole in his chest where the devil took his soul, he is owned by the devil. The angel, a guardian, is hiding her face to block what she has witnessed and uncovered between the two other figures, she is trying to turn a blind eye, but struggling to deal with the burden the knowledge has bestowed on her…

I watched the movie ‘Love is the devil’, A portrait of Francis Bacon’s controlling and abusive relationship with his lover, that ended in the suicidal death of his lover. These are the early concept sketches and layout design using personal elements for the mould to be created in clay.

The final cast will be in lead, which is toxic and poisonous. The material has been chosen to reflect the title of the work. This work focuses on the trauma of getting caught up in a love triangle, and by doing so I was exposed to an abusive controlling relationship between the other two in the triangle, highly toxic…
