Cheap zine creators and artists Tommy Eugene Higson and Nikki Marie Jackson are running their first creative fair A Cheap Affair, seeing various contemporary artists, designers, crafters and fashionistas coming together. With the nature of the event the focus is on selling but as the title suggests it is the inexpensive which is held in acclaim; an opposition to the often inaccessible and sometimes elitist world of the arts. In wanting much needed public attention and accessibility drawn to the arts it is aesthetics, a value all-too-often overlooked that is kept in high regard. Clothes, jewellery, bags, zines and cakes as well as traditional art products such as paintings, drawings, prints and more will all be available for consumption. There is a pic n’ mix tactic implemented by many practitioners reflected in their choice of subject, medium and media resulting in blurring the boundaries of definition. This diversity transcends any hierarchy sometimes held over art and the artistic product and other consumer products or creative enterprises and allows them to be presented on equal terms. A Cheap Affair will breathe new life into the world of consumer products, giving many new creators a platform for their craft to enter into the public conscious, alternatively giving the public a point at which to access a new, welcoming art and fashion culture.
