Open 2011: Animation29 September – 5 November 2011 Preview 28 September 6-8pm Free entry. www.salisburyartscentre.co.uk01722 321744 Following on from 2010’s successful Open Submission exhibition showcasing making and materials, Salisbury Arts Centre presents the 2011 Open, celebrating animation in its broadest sense. Artists have been invited to submit works on the theme of ‘animating me’, which is open to many interpretations from self-portraits to avatars to simply their portal on the world. We particularly looked for work which pushes the boundaries of what you might expect of animation. Some entries are made by artists who primarily work in another medium, including performance and drawing; others employ an original approach to materials and techniques, or subvert familiar visual languages from advertising and gaming. The final line-up will not be revealed until just before the exhibition opens. The selection is being made by a panel of experts. We are very excited to welcome Merlin Crossingham (Artistic Director of Wallace & Gromit for Aardman Animation); artist Oliver Michaels, who hails from the UK but now lives in Brooklyn; Helen Sloan (Director of SCAN, who recently curated Broken Stillness at Salisbury Arts Centre); and Gary Thomas (Co-Director of Animate Projects). Visitors can vote for their favourite work.
