Over the bleak Covid-19 hit winter of 2020/21, I painted a series of pictures with no real intentions in mind other than to escape from the relentless bad news about the pandemic and to experience the pleasure that I get from mark making, be it with a brush or a pencil, charcoal or pastels. The following pictures are what I came up with, deliberately not so political in nature, usually light hearted or romantic, the body of work in most basic terms points toward me looking for light and colour in dismal times.

After a few years of trying out all kinds of mediums and styles, I subconsciously arrived at a semblance of a style. Usually
figurative in nature, predominantly fairly abstract in tone, the main feature of the paintings is – without a doubt – colour. I became really interested in artists from the early 20th century, particularly the German Die Brücke movement and the more well known Fauvist style, pioneered by Matisse and André Derain. I began to experiment by putting flat colours next to each other, to see which would vibrate or ‘sing’ – eventually working out a palette for a new painting.
The subject of the works sometimes have a narrative, on occasion they stem from an old photo or a staged scene, usually about something that caught my imagination on that particular day.
