Artist David Smith has described himself as, “resistant to discipline, not good with commitment and a novice with collage” so when an artist he was following on Twitter announced her intention to do a small abstract collage each day for a year he thought it was just the challenge for him! The result was #Collage365.

David’s #Collage365 project plots the changing nature of each day and its effect on the artist’s state over the year through his creation of a fresh, original artwork every single day. Originally conceived as a bit of fun, almost immediately the project became not only a sandbox for trying out new ideas but also an important part of David’s practice in its own right.

The pieces are small and affordable and make ideal Christmas gifts. There’s something for all tastes with quirky and joyful representational  images along with abstract and sometimes minimalist themes. Intriguing and witty titles add to their attraction.

A huge range of different styles, techniques and materials were used in conjunction with cut paper over the 12 months, including watercolour, acrylic, packaging, and found materials. Increasingly David used his own photography as source material but rejected digital collage for traditional scissors and glue.

During the period of the exhibition there will be some opportunities to view David’s other work at his nearby studio in Bridport. For more information on dates, times and how to get an invitation see davidsmithartist.net or contact David on 07778 981510
