This is the second Sculpture Symposium that Forum Arts have held at Riverhill Himalayan Gardens. Whilst Sculpture Symposiums are common outside of the UK, ForumArts Sculpture Symposium in 2014 was the first to take place in England.
This year, five artists have been selected from an international call to produce entirely new sculptures for the gardens, they will be working on site from the 12th July, giving members of the public an insight into their processes. The artists taking part will be:
Nayoung Jeong, who is a Korean artist who has recently moved to the UK from the States. She will create a shelter constructed with natural materials found at Riverhill.
Claire Mc Dermott, who has a background in botanical illustration will create a sculpture that makes direct reference to the rare handkerchief magnolia tree found at Riverhill. Copper ‘bracts’ will hang from the trees.
Nathan Murphy, who is an upcoming young artist will be using subtle linear steel structures to create an installation in the gardens that will also bring a note of geometry and colour to the gardens.
Tim Norris, is an experienced landscape sculptor, his work has been commissioned for sites worldwide including China, Europe and the USA. He will be making coppiced chestnut arch that will spiral dramatically over a footpath.
Lauren Wilson, an emerging artist whose piece will make a splash, a miniature swimming pool, this work will play with scale and reference the arc of a dive.
This is a group of artists with different sculptural approaches that we are sure will create an exciting mix of working practices and skills.
As well as being able to see artists working on site 9-1pm and 2.30-6.30 daily from Tuesday 12th July until Friday 22nd July, there will also be some special events:
On 15th July. 6-10pm we are inviting the whole local community to come and join the artists for a barbecue and The London Sculpture Workshop (who are providing workshop facilities for the artists during the Symposium) will be giving a demonstration of Bronze Pouring, they will cast sculptures donated by the sculptors who participated in the First National Sculpture Symposium in 2014. The Barbecue will be sponsored by Romshed Organic Farm and Larkins Brewery.
On Sunday 24th July there will be a Private View during which the artists will give a tour round the gardens, presenting their newly installed sculptures. The sculptures will remain on show at Riverhill throughout the summer.
