Mission Gallery is delighted to be showing new paintings by Swansea based artist Glenys Cour. One of the founding members of Mission Gallery, Glenys Cour has been painting for over sixty years; her teacher was the great modernist artist Ceri Richards. She has always reinvented herself with each body of new work; never giving in to staleness or repetition, always seeking to experiment, reinvigorate and refresh her vision. These large canvases, saturated with colour, are a departure from the collages that preoccupied her during the last decade but her image-making continues to be concerned with metaphor: using subjects to explore ideas, sensations and emotions. As Peter Wakelin writes in his exhibition text; “In this sense she is a Romantic painter, and the works here may recall for some the infernal canyons of John Martin, the sublime glow of late Turner or the Pembrokeshire visions of Graham Sutherland at the height of his powers. She finds a never-ending stimulus in the joining and intermingling of sea, land and sky outside her window overlooking Swansea Bay, their effects and patterns restlessly renewing to parallel her creativity”. Glenys Cour never lets her art stand still, working with the energy of someone half her age; she has once again created a stunning body of new work, energised and full of great poetic power.
