Jason Brogan works with sound across various disciplines and modes of presentation. His work expresses a renewed focus on the aesthetic dimension of contemporary experience—that is, the ways in which experience is organized by various material strata from geology to digital media technologies. Understanding the present moment as being constitutive of socio-technological relations as well as environmental and ecological realities, his speculative, aesthetic practice confronts the very material conditions of experience itself, and, in doing so, it addresses an inhuman outside within which the human remains nonetheless entangled.

The digital residencies provide an online space for artists to develop works, ideas and practices. Six residencies will take place online between October – January, with each selected artist having one month to complete a proposed project along the theme of: Media Archaeology/ Zombie Media. Media archaeologists have challenged the rejection of history by modern media culture and theory alike by pointing out unnoticed continuities and ruptures.

Whilst in residence, Brogan will be working on a project Operas for Zombie Media. This was initiated with a particular focus on the repurposing not only of outdated media technologies, but also of the form of opera itself. Brogan will re-articulate the project for online video, employing both an expanded use of sound amplification and digital signal processing, and emphasizing video recording techniques. As such, it appropriates the theoretical grounds of “zombie media” as an effective resource for developing an artistic methodology that acknowledges undead media as an integrated, unavoidable part of our experience of the world. Moving beyond its initial iteration as a live performance.

Brogan lives and works in New York, NY. As a artist, researcher, and musician, Brogan has collaborated and performed worldwide including Ear to the Earth Festival. Electronic Music Foundation, New York, Significant Landscapes. Sonic Art Research Unit. Oxford Brookes University and Instants Chavirés, Paris, France.
