Newcastle Cathedral plays host to an intriguingly diverse exhibition on the theme of light by members of the Northern Potters association. Their display can be found throughout the building, within which its stained glass offers several interesting historic connections while providing a beautiful backdrop. The ceramics range from functional lamps and alternative lighting to decorative sculpture.

Carolyn Corfield’s sculptural pieces, hand built in porcelain and stoneware, explore several facets of light. Referencing the light of knowledge, a key pillar of wisdom, her work also features pieces which portray a cosmic explosion and aspects of the sun.

A figurative sculpture entitled ‘Sunrise’ illustrates a text by Caroline Orr: “She rises from the ashes of the night before, who wanders with the morning through the ever open door.”  Porcelain stars slide down a partially glazed stoneware torso into a bed of ‘ashes’ created from a sand and manganese mixture whilst a gleaming disc of yellow glass represents both the sun and head of the figure.

Do visit and enjoy the atmosphere of this building which was initially founded as a parish church in 1091, during the same period as the castle. The Cathedral, named after St.Nicholas, patron saint of sailors and boats, is notable for its lantern spire, a main navigation point for hundreds of years for ships using the River Tyne.

A ‘Meet the Makers’ event is scheduled Saturday 28th May 11.30 am – 1.30 pm.  An excellent cafe is on site for refreshments.
