This Autumn two young sculptors reflect on the current obsession of food and cooking with an exhibition at BayArt. Lucy Tomlins plays with the well known soundbite “This is not just any food’ to produce a series of plated meals made out of sculptural materials. Becky Whitmore changes familiar objects from the supermarket into bronze. Although Whitmore works in a wide variety of materials bronze has always been at the heart of her practice, her particular interest lies in the social significance of this material and its contemporary context and relevance. Tomlins is interested in the everyday, material objects of our society and her approach is one of a remaking of those ready-made objects. Both are highly skilled as sculptors, finishing their Masters degree from the Royal College of Art in 2012. Whitmore is a former student of Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD) and is currently a member of the New British Art collective based in Carmarthen. Tomlins was recently selected for the Catlin Guide 2013, a book of 40 promising recent UK arts graduates.
