Neogeographies

Helen Snell reinterprets and reframes the Cook narrative to challenge notions of home, nationality, identity and freedom of movement. The exhibition includes costumes, props, interior furnishings and staged photographs.

Captain James Cook’s official artists recorded some of the first encounters between Europeans and indigenous people with varying degrees of objectivity. On closer inspection, these seductive drawings, paintings and prints often reveal a darker, more troubling subtext. The exhibition seeks to reframe and redraw the story  through a series of viewing devices, mirrors,  and items of clothing.
