The rubbish pile has no hierarchy, everything becomes equal in the layers of waste yet here we are still dreaming of a job whilst watching unsold pieces of yesterday’s life stagnate inside window displays.

The shopping center is both a carnival and a prison of our desires it offers instant spontaneity, fantasising, exploring, stealing, wasting time and hanging-out. The youth who either refuse or are excluded in the communion of consumerism celebrate the neglected corners in the architecture of the shopping center and temporarily transform them with their presence.

Unlike other forms of leisure this public display of inactivity is unquantifiable and could be considered a protest as it greatly juxtaposes the intended function of the space. What sorts of social and cognitive activity can this environment offer and as shoppers are moving online how will the mall adapt?

You are invited to come and waste time. WHATEVER.

Mette Hammer Juhl and Lorenzo Tebano live and work in Copenhagen where they run the project space WHOA NOW.
