Exhibition of Paintings by North East artist Elizabeth Talbot.Talbot’s work relates to memory and representation of landscape. She is interested in the filtering effect of the cultural heritage of painting, photography and cinema on our perception of landscape and in particular the tradition of emotional expression through landscape. Talbot’s paintings tend toward monochromatic mystery and a sense of still silent timelessness. The quality of distilled feeling in her work is arrived at through painstaking selection and preparation, followed by gradually building up of the image through subtle layers of thin paint. Talbot uses pre-existing imagery. She searches out suitable material in a diverse range of travel literature, newspaper adverts and so on, responding to images ranging from quintessential English pastoral to dramatic mountain vistas.
