Janet’s art is an observation on the peripheral characteristics of the urban environment. She draws inspiration from the everyday surroundings of a place, capturing the accumulation of history built up on its surfaces and structures before they’re lost through destruction or regeneration. She attempts to provide us with a glimpse into the rituals and habits of modern life and the impact popular culture has on the urban landscape. For this show the town of Bracknell, one of the last ‘new towns’ of the 1950’s with its ageing brutalist architecture and pending regeneration, is the focus for the work in the gallery’s main space. In the smaller side gallery she takes a broader look at the urban surface, exploring how it has become a notice board for expressing social or political opinions alongside cultural events and commercial advertising.
