Kayla Parker: On Location

Tuesday 10th January 2017 – Thursday 19th January 2017

Filmed throughout 2016, Parker’s short film is a hybrid form of landscape cinema and self-portraiture through place, which observes meteorological phenomena and the natural world.

Shown in the cinema between regular cinema programme screenings

On Location is part of Parker’s research project responding to Annabel Nicolson’s artist’s book, Escaping Notice (1977). The film centres on an unnamed hollow way that leads to the remote farmhouse featured in Nicolson’s book. Sensitive to the changes caused by the seasons, Parker captures the differences in temperature, wind, light and shade, colour and pattern, sound, flora and fauna; and accompanies the delicate footage with field recordings from the sunken lane in rural mid-Devon.

Dr Kayla Parker is a Plymouth-based artist film-maker and a lecturer in Media Arts at Plymouth University. Dr Parker has previously shown work with Plymouth Arts Centre as part of One Minute Volume 7 in 2014, for Mobile Cinema in 2011 and for a solo exhibition, Frame By Frame in 1994. Her films have received numerous network screenings on the BBC, ITV and Channel 4; her work is shown worldwide at film festivals and in touring programmes, and she has shown in exhibitions at the Barbican London, the Newlyn Gallery, Tate, the Whitechapel, Arnolfini, and Videotheque de Paris.
