‘I love technology, but I also hate it. Every new device gives me hope that maybe that’s the one that is going to change my life. It never is.’

Hugo Lami (1994, Portugal) lives and works in London.

Lami’s work looks into the digital and virtual absurdity, evoking our social dependency on our devices and social media. In this exhibition ‘Over the Clouds’ Hugo’s paintings portray the defragmentation of personality. As the world becomes more digital, the image of Self can be whatever we please. The Avatars we present start to be the real us, as we have have no physical boundaries in the virtual. Anyone can be anything over in the digital cloud.

Hugo Lami draws inspiration from the surrealists Magritte, Salvador Dali, Leonora Carrington and brings to life a body of work that floats in a virtual world that exists in our minds. A humoristic approach to the transformation we are undergoing, one where sometimes we become closer to animals, and other times to monstruous creatures bounded by the limit of our imagination.
