Paul Carter’s sculptural assemblages and immersive installations appear to exist somewhere between an activity of careful and obsessive collage and chaotic, incidental drifts of urban detritus and utilitarian construction materials. Responding to aspects of architectural space and the built environment, the artist’s urgent, functional re-ordering exists in a state of constant contradiction, dereliction and construction.

His work is often conceived under the unifying idea that everywhere is a kind of hotel, a place of exchange in which we are both the guests and the workers. Whether considering domestic, commercial or industrial spaces; luxurious splendour or low-rent dereliction, Carter suggests that all architectures are transitory constructs, acting as a functional service provision within our lives.

The exhibition has been developed with the support of Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts.
