Plant Communitas

2–24 April 2022, Museum in the Park, Stroud UK

Communitas [kɔmˈmuːnɪt̪äːs̠] is a Latin noun which refers to an unstructured community in which persons are equal, it also signifies the very spirit of community.

The Plant Communitas exhibition considers plants and their active engagement in the human spheres of the everyday, the imagination, medicinal and mystical traditions and eco-political spheres. It focuses on the ‘backgrounded’ world of vegetal beings, infinitely intertwined in the human lifeworld.

The exhibition features a community of artists from diverse practices, places and different times. All works involve human-plant interminglings with real and imagined vegetal beings. There is new artwork made especially for the Plant Communitas exhibition and there are selected pieces that were already in existence; some for decades, others even longer; there are samplers too, a promise of further work to come. The artists are based locally, nationally and internationally. The exhibition is accompanied by a schedule of events including artists in conversation, eco-political discussions and as well as family friendly workshops and encounters. (Programme to be published in March)
