CLYDACH

A couple of years ago artist Allison Neal wrote key facts / stories about the Clydach Gorge and invited visual artists a writers to respond to the gorge in light of recent changes happening with the long-lasting road re-construction work happening now (due to be completed sometime in 2019).

So, over the last few years, our group has met and shared our thoughts, poems and visual work responding sometimes directly to the changes and at other times using our thinking around the Gorge as a fertile starting point leading to new work.

I have used this opportunity to develop several new threads of work, starting with visiting the area, painting large canvas’ incorporating my visions of our current use of the land (while thinking of Clydach as a site of hard labour a century ago or so.  Also thinking of the possibility that Shakespeare wrote a Midsummers Night Dream in a cave entrance around Clydach, this leading into a loose cave painting on canvas, using acrylic, tissue and steel wool in the process.

In a whimsical twist I gave away Little Gem lettuces to residents of Clydach in return for stories (or gems) about the area, to enrich my background research with material simply not accessible through internet research.   This gathering of stories has led on to a new phase of work now in the early stages; etching onto a series of over 200 small aluminium plates.
