Sophia Demetriou’s work expresses the agonized and emotional states of psyche through the transformations of the human body. Demetriou is working with materials as plaster, marble, wood, iron and recently cloth. She is working intuitively without knowing the final shape   of the sculpture and experimentally, changing the primary idea through process.  She is interested in how techniques like carving can be applied on materials like metals and combine techniques like carving and casting together.

The exhibition ‘The Excavation of the Unconscious’ is the metaphor of the carving process. The movement of the hand while it carves lines to reduce material, is a process which allows you to dim and confront the hidden side of yourself and get to the truth of oneself. This, metaphorically, is a similar process of ‘excavating’  of what it is intimate in our psyche, opening the insights and dimmed into darkness which then  comes to light (or  the whiteness of a marble).

Having graduated from Chelsea College of Art, University of the Arts, London and Athens School of Fine Art, Demetriou had solo exhibitions in Cyprus and Greece and has also exhibited in the UK and Czech Republic. Her work was shown on the LTV channel as spotlight for her exhibition in the House of Cyprus, of the Embassy of Cyprus  in Athens,  Greece, 2011. She passed first at the entrance examinations of Drawing and Painting of Athens School of Fine Art, receiving full undergraduate scholarship from the National Foundation of Scholarships (IKY). Demetriou received a full scholarship to study in Spain ‘Creation and Sculpture Techniques’, at Universidad Complutense de Madrid part of one year Erasmus programme.
